ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL & GOVERNANCE

OVERVIEW

The consideration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors has become critical to the success of businesses across all sectors in Africa.

CarePoint has embraced ESG as a value driver, recognizes it as a globally accepted framework for the assessment of non-financial risk factors to a business and ascribes to global standards in its implementation. CarePoint has developed an Environmental & Social Management System (ESM) based on the IFC Performance Standards, and the approach the ESMS takes is founded on the four principles of Plan-Do-Check-Act (“PDCA”) as specified in the globally recognized Good International Industry Practice (“GIIP”) standard. The ESMS covers all phases of CarePoint’s operations cycle, from valuation of a target or construction of a new facility to completion of an acquisition and operating the facility. The ESMS will help CarePoint and its brands to integrate ESG into its core business operations through a set of clearly defined, repeatable processes.

The ESG policies at CarePoint are geared towards assessing and minimizing any adverse impact on the environment; taking into consideration social development contributions; promoting a culture of good governance, accountability, and transparency in business dealings; and, using effective risk management and control systems to mitigate ESG risks. Having undertaken a comprehensive ESG audit of all its brands, CarePoint and its brands are well on the way to implementing various ESG-related improvements that will ensure ESG maturity over time.

Through ESG, CarePoint is committed to making a positive impact to achieve a healthy community, healthy planet and healthy returns. This commitment to ESG is demonstrated through CarePoint’s robust investment and management strategies, risk assessment and mitigation capabilities, ESG integration across its operations and emphasis on mastering the fundamentals.

CarePoint’s impact metrics are tracked based on commonly used Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) objectives and metrics for healthcare investments, including:

  • Expanding access to quality, affordable healthcare for low-to-middle income or underserved populations.

  • Improving the quality and delivery of healthcare by building local capacity or human capital.

  • Supporting healthcare facilities and enterprises through access to finance and increasing available capital to the health sector.

  • Creating jobs and job opportunities for local employees in the healthcare sector.

CarePoint has established a dedicated ESG department that works closely with all departments, and, in particular, with the Quality & Compliance department, to deliver excellent standards of care to produce a tangible positive impact on both patient outcomes and financial returns.

QUALITY & COMPLIANCE

CLINICAL QUALITY

CarePoint prides itself on ensuring that all our healthcare brands in Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria deliver services of the highest standard. We are dedicated to the total health and well-being of all patients, and thus, we bring on board the very best personnel in all service areas.

In any CarePoint facility you visit, you are assured of the best care from highly qualified and dedicated medical professionals, who are ready to attend to your healthcare needs.

We ensure strict compliance to all national guidelines for patient treatment, as applicable in the respective countries, by conducting mandatory clinical audits and reviews of patient case notes.

While making available modern, state-of-the-art equipment to facilitate your diagnosis and treatment proceedings, we also ensure your needs are met with the utmost confidentiality, as patient files are encrypted and can only be accessed by authorized medical professionals.

QUALITY CONTROL

We are constantly on a quality improvement journey, and for this reason, we have a department (Quality & Compliance) dedicated to the continuous provision of services that meet your needs and prioritize your satisfaction as a patient.

This department facilitates periodic audits, partnered facility assessments, training of staff in key technical areas, full compliance with regulatory standards and initiatives to ensure patient satisfaction.

Our strategic partnership with quality control organizations such as SafeCare and our strict reliance on carefully documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) show our commitment and dedication to ensuring the best for our patients.

At CarePoint, patient satisfaction is highly regarded, and hence, avenues exist for the collection of suggestions and concerns. This feedback is carefully considered and addressed to meet patients’ recommendations.

REGULATIONS & LICENSES

CarePoint and all its subsidiaries are registered as recognized businesses in our three countries of operation: Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria.  In addition, all our facilities are duly registered and licensed by the respective health regulatory bodies in these countries.

Meridian Health Group (MHG) in Kenya has all facilities duly registered and licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dental Council (KMPDC), which has the mandate to regulate the training, practice and licensing of medicine & dentistry and healthcare institutions.

In Ghana, Rabito Clinic is registered and licensed by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA), which operates on the mandate of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829) Section 11 (1 and 2) to license and register every health facility in Ghana.

CarePoint Hospital in Nigeria is licensed by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the body charged by Lagos State to monitor both private and public health facilities to ensure registration and accreditation.

Our insistence on the registration and licensure of all our facilities is a deliberate step to ensure our operations function according to the rules and regulations mandated by the state.

SAFECARE PARTNERSHIP

At CarePoint, matching international standards of healthcare delivery has always been our goal. Thus, in 2021, we entered into a 3-year partnership with SafeCare - a subsidiary of the PharmAccess Group - to help elevate our service delivery in our healthcare facilities across the continent.

SafeCare is accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association (IEEA) (previously: ISQua) and was formed by a collaboration between ISQua and Joint Commission International (JCI) to measure the quality of healthcare provision and to provide a staged, motivating and technology-powered pathway to sustainable improvement.

This partnership entrusts SafeCare to assess the standards of healthcare delivery throughout our organization and to set benchmarks in healthcare safety and quality. We can proudly report Level 2-4 SafeCare Certification, and we continue to work towards achieving Level 5 for all facilities in the near future.

COVID-19 SAFETY & RESPONSE

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, CarePoint has become a beacon in the healthcare sector. CarePoint did not delay in instituting strict safety protocols, including a work-from-home program for office staff, providing training to office and health facility staff on how to protect themselves from the virus, and supporting its brands in acquiring much needed PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). These measures have been instrumental in keeping both patients and staff safe, while allowing operations to run, and patients to continue receiving much needed care.

In response to the challenges in accessing healthcare facilities created by COVID-19 and social distancing protocols, the CarePoint telemedicine platform offers remote access to healthcare services during this global crisis. Whereas many businesses faced supply chain disruption due to COVID-19, CarePoint’s emergency preparedness greatly reduced the impact of this disruption.

As COVID-19 vaccines have become available, CarePoint has continued to encourage and support its staff in all jurisdictions to get vaccinated, with 46% of staff receiving at least one dose of a vaccine. CarePoint brands in Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria have been at the forefront of offering free COVID-19 vaccination services to the public by partnering with their respective governments and Ministries of Health. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, CarePoint has continued to demonstrate its resilience and remains a leading contributor to the development and success of Africa’s present and future healthcare system.
